Tangram: learn through an example

Bring your attention to one round of Tangram. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Look at what changes after your first action. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Arrange seven pieces into the square target. Rotate or flip a piece to fit; this game currently offers one target shape.

Try a more deliberate round

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Use the example to check your reasoning.

The objective of a round

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Start here and follow along

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Your inputs

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

Put the rules into context

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Check the stated objective.

Where a round can go wrong

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
